Backtrack

To review both verbally and non verbally a discussion using similar keywords and tonalities in order to ensure understand for both parties. This is a powerful way to summarise whilst also maintaining rapport and understanding.

Basic Assumptions

NLP makes a number of presuppositions or basic assumptions to form a foundation for the various techniques. For example " The map is not the territory". You can learn more about the key assumptions here.

Behaviour

The way we act physically, emotionally and reactively to the environment and people we are interacting with. This will include both voluntary and involuntary reactions including Accessing Cues which may or may not be visible.

Behavioural Flexibility

Having the ability to be able to flexibly change the way you act and behave in order to get the outcome or response you are seeking to achieve.

Behavioural Psychology

A form of psychology which considers that all mental and physical activity can be explained in terms of bodily responses to external factors. In essence removing subjective phenomena such as ideas and emotions. See also Cognitive Psychology.

Behavioural Technologies

The modelling of psychology systems and techniques to facilitate changing and extending human behaviour.

Beliefs

Subjective ideas we develop about ourselves and the world around us. These are 'our truths and lies about the world' and not necessarily truths or lies which which other would wish to share. Beliefs are developed through our experiences in the world and we then use these ideas or beliefs to filter our future experiences.

Big Picture

Part of the system of chunking. When considering a particular situation it is sometimes helpful to consider the 'bigger picture' for example you might be able to walk straight across a river, but taking a wider bigger picture view might help you to see a bridge which will avoid you getting wet.

Brain Lobes

The various areas or sections of the brain which provide for sensory processing and integration of what we see, hear and feel both emotionally and physically.

Break State

An abrupt shift of focus which can help in interrupting potentially negative or problematic states. A great example to is to shout loudly "Hey.. YOU!".
